I. How Can I?

O Lord my God

How can I question your wisdom?
When you have intricately woven me from my mother’s womb

How can I boast about my own strength?
When I am clay in the potters’ hands

How can my heart grow cold?
When every beat is a gift from you

How can I not sing praise?
When every breath of my lungs is yours

How can I forget you?
When you have engraved me on your palms

How can I doubt your mercy?
When you took my penalty for me

How can I wonder if you care?
When you hung on a tree for me

II. How Can you?

O Lord my God

How can you who sees every sparrow?
Provide for my every need and care

How can you who set the stars in the sky?
Love me and care for me as you do

How can you keep pulling the weeds?
As they threaten to choke out the seed

How can you keep finding me?
When I wander away from the fold

How can you keep sweeping away the debris?
When—like a coin—I lie lost and forgotten

How can you run to me?
As I take my first step home

How can you welcome me as a son?
When I only deserve to be your slave

How can you love me so much?
When I am selfish and self-centered

How can you who are eternal? Taste death in my place

How can you who are never in debt? Pay the price I could not pay

How can you raise me from the dead? When I was buried in shame and sin

How can you prepare a place for me? An inheritance that I did not earn or deserve

III. How I Need You

O Lord my God

Fill me anew
With your Spirit
That you give so generously each morning

Remind me of your tender mercies and providence
Each day
So that when my thoughts drift from you
They are brought back again

O Lord my God

Without you I would wander away
Keep me safe in your fold
Guard me against wolves and robbers
So that no one can snatch me from your hand

Without you I would become a prodigal again
Remind me
That it is better to be a servant in your household
Than the king of the world

Embrace me
Clothe me with your righteousness
Plant my roots down by the still waters
So that I may bring fruit to honor you

O Lord my God
Anchor me with the firm and secure hope of Christ
The nail in a sure place
Let my heart rest assured
For you will never cast me out

Let me gaze on your power and glory
Each day
Until I see you face to face
And faith becomes certainty

Until I am welcomed into your bosom
Forever and ever
